A Note From Library Director, Crystal Middleton

Greetings and well wishes for springtime!  We certainly welcome it here...  As the sunlight hours lengthen we eagerly await the spring crocuses, and wade through a bit of muddiness on the way, let's celebrate reading together this March.  On March 2, we will have a Read Across America party with activities, snacks, storytelling, and a pop-up book shop thanks to Inquiring Minds, our local bookseller.  The National Education Association celebrates diverse and inclusive books, and diverse readers, with Read Across America.  We agreed that's a great thing to celebrate so we hope you'll join us this Sunday between 12-4 pm.  In addition, our book groups are going strong: join us on Mondays at 3 pm for Elting Book Club on March 3 or Mystery Readers' Book Club on March 10.  There is something for everyone here at Elting, please have a look at our programs, search our catalog, stop by, or give us a call.  We would love to help you find what you're looking for!

Serving New Paltz for Over 100 Years

In 1909, members of the New Paltz Study Club were the first to realize the need for a free library association in the village of New Paltz. Seven women from the club formed a committee and opened a reading room on the second floor of the building at 60-62 Main Street.

The Study Club assumed the expenses and hired Miss Flora Schoonmaker as librarian. When applying for a charter they realized that their location would not meet the standards set by the University of the State of New York.  A new, larger, first floor location was found in the building at 68 Main Street.
